According to the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy, epistemology is the study of knowledge and how it is justified. This work is an epistemological allegory showcasing the mermaid, a creature of legend, as a symbol for faith based knowledge and the manatee, the animal thought to have inspired the mermaid legend, representing evidence based knowledge. The mermaid and manatee parallel the distinction between faith traditions with the scientific method. I use accordion bound vellum with the negative space of letters and images illuminated from behind to explore the contradiction between supernatural wonder and empirical research.

Basada en la Encyclopedia de Filosofía del Internet, la epistemología es el estudio del conocimiento y métodos de justificación. Esta obra es una alegoría epistemológica demostrando la sirena, una criatura legendaria, representando el conocimiento a base de la fé y el manatee, el animal que supuestamente inspiro la leyenda de la sirena, representando el conocimiento a base de la evidencia. La sirena y el manatee paralelan la distinción entre tradiciones de fe con el método científico. Uso papel vitela encuadrenadas estilo acordeón con el espacio negativo de letras e imágenes iluminados de a tras para expresar la contradicción entre los asombros sobrenaturales e las investigaciones empíricas.
